The Story
The Last 5 Years
The
Last 5 Years examines the remnants of the five-year relationship between
Cathy Hiatt and Jamie Wellerstein. The musical opens as Cathy is lamenting
the end of the couple's marriage, and then shifts to Jamie's perspective at
the beginning of the relationship. As the show progresses, Jamie and Cathy's
timelines drift together, cross, and then drift apart again. The musical ends
as Jamie leaves Cathy for the last time, and as Cathy kisses Jamie goodbye
after their incredible first date.
The Last 5 Years was written by Jason Robert Brown, and won the New York Drama Desk Award for Best Music and Lyrics is 2001. Variety called the show "short, bittersweet, and nearly perfect". Richard Ouzounian (Toronto Star) said "The music will grab you, the lyrics are laugh-out loud witty...Give this one a chance!" The contemporary score, presented by a cast of only two and an orchestra of six, will haunt you long after you leave the theatre.
