Showtune Showdown 2009

May 9, 2009

Bronson Centre Theatre
(211 Bronson Avenue, Ottawa)

Tickets: $16 in advance, or $20 at the door

Three talented performing arts groups will be competing in the fourth annual Show Tune Showdown taking place on May 9, 2009 at 8 pm at the Bronson Centre Theatre.

Show Tune Showdown is Tone Cluster’s own blend of “Canadian Idol”, “Name That Tune” and “Family Feud”, with some extra Broadway glitz thrown into the mix. Three teams of four singers representing arts organizations from across Ontario will sing a selection of Broadway or off-Broadway show tunes in front of three local celebrity judges. The team garnering the most points will be awarded the grand prize of $500 for their organization.

The three teams set to compete in this year’s event include 2008 champions Suzart Productions and 2007 winners Zucchini Grotto Theatre Company, and new challengers from the Sheridan College Musical Theatre program.  Traveling 600km from Oakville, the Sheridan College team will be the first from outside of Ottawa to take part in the event.

Adding to the evening’s entertainment, audience members can get into the act by volunteering to sing songs randomly selected by the MC during the ‘Showdown’ rounds. Those brave enough to take on the challenge can award the points they win to their favorite team.

Three local Ottawa celebrities are generously donating their time to make this year’s event a success.  Judges for this year’s event include James Caswell, Music Director and Conductor for the Canadian Centennial Choir, Kathleen Petty, host of CBC Radio One’s Ottawa Morning and CBC News: The House, and Alex Munter, former city councilor and current Executive Director of the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa.

“Show Tune Showdown is an enormously entertaining evening and a unique way to involve the arts community in Tone Cluster's fundraising efforts," says Rob Bowman, the event’s producer. “The tremendous word of mouth that we have been receiving has helped to build our audience year after year for this fun-filled showcase of musical theatre.”

Tickets for Show Tune Showdown 2009 are $16 in advance and $20 at the door, and may be purchased at The Leading Note, mother tongue books, After Stonewall, Wilde’s, Collected Works and at www.ticketweb.ca. The event’s proximity to Mother’s Day also makes tickets to the show an excellent and memorable gift.  Proceeds from the event will be used to raise funds to support Tone Cluster's 16th season.
